Hi Dave. I've now ordered these from you . Would there be any downside mounting them in a wooden box . Also how far apart is it best to mount them . And would you mount one side on to the other .
Last question how thick would you go with the wire . Hopefully that's it . Best wishes phil.

these generally are used at line level so shielding isn't that big of a concern. A wood box should be fine just be sure to keep it clear from power cords and transformers and you should be fine. Adjusting the position will almost always get rid of any induced hum.

It all comes down to the amount of induced hum in relation to the signal level present in the transformer. I had a friend use a pair of unshielded autoformers "backwards" as a SUT and he was able to get it acceptably quiet bu floating them out in space on a mic stand. I was shocked he was able to do this but practically speaking as a volume control the autoformers rarely need shielding.
