Can L and R AVC modules be housed separately?

I recently purchased the autoformer modules and have been looking at pictures of how reviewers wired them up. I noticed that the ground leads left and right are all connected in one box.
Due to space constraints I wanted to have two separate boxes, left and right, either side of my existing channel selector. In its easiest configuration, this would mean the left and right ground leads would not be connected. My question is would this work? Would I get a nasty ground "huuummmm"?
