capacitance seen by cartridge from MC step-ups

Post by vinylkid »

based on what i have read from a number of sources, phono stage resistance is seen by the cartridge.

if a cartridge is connected to a set of MC step-ups, is the input capacitance of the phono stage connected to the secondary seen by the cartridge (+ capacitance of any interconnect connecting the two) seen by the cartridge? or is the capacitance of the tonearm cable the only capacitance seen?

Yes. the capacitance is also reflected back to the cartridge and in this case the value is multiplied by the turns ratio squared so 100pf on the downstream side of a 1"10 reflects back to the cartridge as 0.01µf. Fortunately the low impedance of the cartridges typically associated with SUT's prevents this from becoming an issue until you get to large values of input capacitance and high ratios of step up. (1:100 sut and 500pf of capacitance)
