Resistor of 50W..

Post by julien591 »

Dear,

I would like to know if you can make this special resistor for a filament bias.

I need to dissipate 55W.. That will be hot.. Maybe I can consider to make them oil filled.

Thank you in advance,
Best

chances are a 55W copper wound resistor will be impractical.

Hello Dave,

Thank you for your reply.

I see.. And what about 5 resistor of 10W in // ?

For filament bias, I guess it should be better than "classical" resistor!

what value of resistance are you in need of?

Hello Dave,

I would need :

two of 28.3 ohms 3W
two of 400ohms 36W
two of 14.8 ohms 7W
two of 12.64 ohms 55W

It's the power they'll dissipate, so maybe put few in // to reach the power.

Have you tried with silver wire also ?

Best :)

OK lets take the 12.68Ω 55W version.

That is 2A of current and in order to carry that without excessive heating which increases the DCR I would need to use something like #18 wire. #17 has 1.28Ω of resistance per pound so each resistor would need to be a 10 pound spool. Need I consider this in silver :-)

Even the seemingly easy 28.3Ω 3W would need a pound of #25 wire each.

I guess the thing to learn here is these are not well suited for any sort of power dissipation and are best used in very low power / low signal applications like loading of a cartridge.

I see.. So silver is impossible, since only the silver will cost is 400USD for 1kg..

And copper is still impossible ?

If really impossible, I'll go for few carbon resistor in //...

Best :)

Impossible sounds like a challenge but I do not think any of the values you need are realistic.

Dear Dave,

I see.. Too bad, I guess I'll make my own graphite resistor..

Maybe I'll come back for other projects will less watt needed :)
