Transfos needed foe SE EL84 amp

Post by crazy bill the eel killer »

Hello Dave,

Per my e-mail, here's the info on the SE OPTs I need.

I hit my EL84s kind of hard. 290V B+ @ 45 ma.

I use only single driver fullrange speakers, so a secondary of 12 ohms would work very well.

Primary 5K.

I'll let you decide how much headroom I need in the current rating, I'm figuring rated @ 50-60 ma should be good, but if you think increasing that would be beneficial sonically, so be it. I wouldn't know. You decide.

Lastly, from what I've been able to glean on your forum, I'm leaning towards the nickel cores. I'm a TONE junkie over detail.

We'll converse later about ITs and PS chokes and the combos I need to achieve the perfect tone.

Thanks, Crazy Bill

nickel is really interesting. at first impression it seems like it gives you huge tone but after a short while you find gobs more detail that has always been hiding there. After you get used to the sound everything else just seems to jam harshness into your ears under the guise of detail
