Zen I/V with transformers.

Post by dave slagle »

Nelson just published his Zen I/V converter and I was asked how a transformer could be used to replace the caps.

Below is my soon to be tested solution.

Looks interesting. Those three-leg buggers behaves like pentodes. PP-transformer too, if I understand it right.

Not sure the circuit is useful though. As far as I know the mainpart of DACs are with DC offset. Some are also balanced out together with DC offset. Haven´t bothered to read the thread where this might be explained.

The beauty of the transformer is the way the DC and AC components act in the transformer. DC is opposing and the AC adds. This means there is No net DC on the core and I'm sure I can get bandwidth out the wazoo with the transformers. The series circuit assures a perfect DC match and one of these days ver halen will build it.

Then end user can chose to filter if they desire.

It all reminds me back to the discussions of the "iron concertina" which required that the transformer carry DC.

Dave,

The differential out of a Buffalo III Sabre 9018, could this be done with trans? The output from the secondary would be to drive a tube output.
As far as I can tell the lower the primary impedance the lower the distortion though this leans it towards a current output. I figure the lower the impedance of the primary, I could add a resistive load to act as a tunable I/V.

How far off am I?

Thanks,

D

And what about bifilar, would it work in this situation?

Thanks,
