as dave is in DC at Capital Audio Fest, I will just give my opinion... *my opinion*...... I have not had an issue with a nominal 16V into his autoformers... very few genres have output at full level down to 20Hz.... and as you go up in frequency, the headroom of the iron grows at an exponential rate...

super duper great to hear that things went well! I missed out on thai food (my favorite) and endless tube geek discussions (also my favorite).... instead, dave made me go to an audio show... which, although I got to see many friends, was not nearly as much fun as Thailand would have been.. bad sound...

hey chris.. as you can guess form the lack of reples, this one is tough to dignos without knowledge of teh circuit... teh difference is in teh preamp.. the amplifier is getting teh same voltage to the first tube in both cases... well, the source impedance seen by the first tube changes, but that usu...

hey Jimmy... the project goals developed when you were likely buried in the school books.. the sound of A1... so biased in A1... voltage *well* below 1kV... need a little power, so good behavior into A2... sort of like randy's 'il monstro... and I think you and I can both agree that straight A2 soun...

hey guys.... I just feel obligated to say that although I like those tubes, a 1:1 and any A2 is pretty much out of the question... maybe three stage... 826 > 46 > gm70.... but, as Jim says, with my horns, a 46 > GM70 with a 71A linestage is plenty of gain.. and, yes, I realize that is unusual.. :^O ...

hey fellas.. we were talking about a bifilar 1:1 for a 46 driving a GM70... not sure which I would like better in this application... the GM70 has pretty good tone... so then I guess I would just choose the one I think just makes more music.. and, to me, that is the 46... but I know more than a few ...

DOH! yeah... I forgot about the bifilar voltage issue... I have an arrangement with dave.. if I break, burn, explode anything, it is my fault.. and I have to report the fault conditions.. I guess I am more of a beta tester on some things... still.. I'd aim for 350V and a 3c24... then make him be rea...

well... first build the filament supply... a variac will help here.. build for 6V and variac down...

then build a high voltage supply... again use a variac...

clip leads and a stack of cathode resistors will get you where you want to be...

dave wound it.. I built it... I ended up using the Eimac 15e to drive the 304tl... the driver stage was amazing.. super clean... I am actually rebuilding the power supply side of the 15E breadboard so that I can try the 15E in my phono stage... in the end, the combo of Eimac output and driver was a ...

Hello, Simon... yes, I suspect you can do this... I have used dave's autoformer for gain many times... just reverse the input and output... the catch is that you have to have a low source impedance as you will lose inductance/bass.... but that is exactly what you want! so... here's what I would do.....

I talked to jimmy on the phone about this one... so, just to make sure we were crazy, I had him measure grid to ground on the 71a.. we measured open circuit... even with the volume (tvc) on the first "click"... but he has measured the bias of the tube and all was fine.. it makes music.. so...

I completely agree that tapping would be great... with these you really need lots of thought on gain structure to keep the digital sugnal up... it took me a while to get mine just right... but with the tapped tranformers, it is easy.. and, yeah, once you get rid of the output stage, they sound good....

I listened to Steve's amps with a few different cap combinations yesterday..
