Thanks for the info Ray. I must admit I tried what you suggest and didn't get the drop-down menu , for some reason . In the meantime I have got this sort of drop-down set-up working with another guy's advice/files and the Norman Koren models : http://www.audio-talk.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=10231...

Hi - I'm struggling to do the basic set-up of this - like a couple of other people did . In the 2a,2b,2c sections of Stephie's instructions, I don't know what an 'include' file is, or where they are . Is there a sub-folder for .inc files ?Do I need to get involved with these in order to do this now ...

Good ! - thanks for the links . Could be, after further thinking, it may have been one of my friends who tried what Thorsten had done with the relays, but didn't like the sound himself .. but then he is notoriously fickle ! Is it not possible to find a few examples of these relays NOS or loan from o...

I may be seen as a party-pooper here, but I seem to remember Thorsten Loesch reporting bad results from using mercury relay switches in a pre-amp or phono amp . Unfortunately I wasn't able to find the comments with a quick search, as his site & pages have recently disappeared ( the 'Fortunecity'...

ACF2 ?

My friend Nick ( G ) recently built 211 and 100TH ( Eimac ) amps with the J.Ross McDonald ACF-2 circuit as driver. http://jrossmacdonald.com/jrmpubs/040CathodeFollower.pdf That should work quite nicely, although you'd need something like 35-40mA in the right-hand section to handle the Miller cap of ...

Core !

Dave - Just gearing up finally to get these chokes into a rebuild of my current phono - planning the layout etc . I occurs to me I never asked you what the core materials were on these. Can you remember ? - they were the same as supplied to Andrew as discussed here . Have you got a new e-mail btw ? ...

I'm sure you're right Dave - but as an interim solution, it has a lot of advantages in economy ( not least in postage from the US ) . Is the above plan feasible ? Otherwise I'm going to struggle to use those cores in the forseeable future . There's likely to be a fair bit of other expense coming up,...

Hey Dave The more I experiment with this horn system, the more I think I'm going to go tri-amp instead ....the direct connection to the driver seems best, and the filters need to be in the amps . I tried e-mailing you with the following suggestion but your Earthlink is 'bouncy' at the moment . :? He...

Service with a smile ...and a graph ! Very educational Dave . It takes a clever guy to explain something simple . I'd never appreciated how badly the crossover affects the driving impedance . Illustrates one big reason why it's 'better to do it in the front than in the back' as Harvey Rosenberg wou...

Hi Dave Well it looks quite clear that I need an autoformer for this. Interesting that your description neatly illustrates why the L-pad option to step-down gives a poor result - the source impedance is too high and comparable with the speaker . hence the dull , 'lacking sparkle' 'undynamic' warning...

Tell me about autoformer for 288-H

Hi Dave

To add to the queries I put to you in e-mail today ...
We should put up the discussion here about your thoughts on an autoformer design to step-down my new GPA 288-H drivers from 109db/W to 100-102dB approx to allow crossover to Aurum Cantus G3 ribbons.

Tom I heard several LCR phonos amongst 20+ units compared at ETF 2005 . All sounded great, the tone through the midrange sounding more natural . More recently I was able to do a detailed comparison of my own D3a/20kRIAA/D3a phono against a friend's LCR using the Thorsten 2002 circuit . I reckon I pi...

I don't think low Z is the whole thing. having gone from 105k to 20k Rc RIAA on my own D3a/D3a unit, there were some improvements in transparency and dynamics , but hearing a good LCR is a proper 'step' change. There's a much better musical connection between the bass and midrange, better bass tone ...

Are they cylindrical anode then ?
Do they need to be driven in A2 ?

More

Dave, I will google Lenz's law and try to get up to speed on your ideas ...but my concern was not the core , but overcoming capacitive loading and wire surface effects . We're dealing with such tiny voltages, that the currents are inevitably small and I wonder about reducing the current in the coils...

Ok, guys, but what are you going to simulate ? I don't believe the differences will be just about gross frequency response . My suspicion is that with the load placed on the primary, and hence very low levels of current going into the transformer primary , you might see changes at low signal levels ...
