The C3 reunited for the evening to evaluate the 49 and 80% nickel transformers. Johnny and I have been using amorphous core trannies for several years. When we optimized the gaps we found that the gaps required were larger than expected based on the plots. The same occurred this time. For the 80% ni...

Tweeters

Hi Romy This is a bit off the subject. As an introduction, you helped me out several years ago with documentation and mounting template for a Micro Seiki tonearm for which I was most grateful. I was recently perusing your informative web site and enjoyed the section on tweeters. I was unaware of the...

LR phono stage

Hi Steve

I'm just getting around to building the phono stage with the original PCBs and Lundahl iron. Have there been any mods, including those alluded to in the June 6, 2007 post?

Thanks

Hi Guyz There is something to Dave's theory but it is not "spot on." There are possibly some loading effects but the tweeters have a lot to say in their own right. Jonny and I did the Sanders experiment. We compared a couple of tracks with 1. Super tweeters in: 2. Supretweeters out: and 3....

Hi Jeffrey That was surely a nail biter until the last paragraph. I do have more bass control at my house, but my amps go down lower than John's. In his setting both versions of the amps sounded great. John plans to switch to NuForce amps for his amps for the bass cabinets and he will remove the fre...

Thanks, Jeffrey.

Sounds like we're going with the Mundorfs. No problemo! I presume you are happy with the sound.

The lone winger will serve as a backup in case one of my other 75s bite the dust. You'll have a niced matched pair that will fly without wings. Ha ha.

Hi Jeffrey I just noticed this. I may have a better solution for you. Is the pair you are replacing mine with the winged version? If so I'll trade you the single winged tube from the pair in which one was broken for a matched pair of 75TLs without the wings if that works for you. Glad to hear everyo...

Hi Jeffrey The 10 uF caps are actually made by Industrial Condenser Corp. I have a pair of GE 4 uF caps in my preamp. I don't know if they are Spearinol. The common point is that they are in big old ugly gray rectangular cans. The GEs I had in my 45 amps sounded better that all the others. Why don't...

Hi Jeffrey

What effect did the caps have specifically on the lower end? It would be interesting to hear the effects of the different Mundorfs. I have used both the silver and gold versions and they are pretty good. I never made a direct comparison in a given location, however.

Thanks

Hi Jeffrey Thanks for all the torture, I mean diligent listening. When John reads the post he'll have chest pain! This should be really interesting. My amps only function down to 160Hz. Below that the sound is handled by the small solid state NuForce amps. Me thinks my amps will thrive in that envir...

Thanks, Jeffrey. The amps were designed to go down to 100Hz flat and then tail off. There is still significant info at 50 to 60 Hz. It was designed that way because we didn't want to sacrifice any openness in the mids and highs. I look forward to hearing how they do in the "Big Rig." Steve

Grant forgot to bring the 4.2s. We'll plug them in next week. At my place the combination of the 50:1 ...

Transformer/choke trials

Hi Dave With the various transformers and chokes you sent us recently we attempted to optimize the sound we can obtain by altering the number of windings in the cores and the gap betweent he C-cores. There is one more thing I neglected to clarify with you. The "temporary" cores you are sending we figured to be amorphous as the final ones will be. If this is not the case it will create an additional variable. Will they, in fact, be amorphous?

bob bob bobbin away
